I grew up in southern California and spent my younger years excelling at competitive swimming., earning me an athletic scholarship to San Diego State University where I received my bachelor of arts in communication.
After college I embarked on a new athletic endeavor of open ocean competition and competed on a national level. It was in competition that I sustained chronic shoulder and hip injuries consistent with overuse. Pilates was introduced to me as a way to strengthen my core, back and buttocks. Pilates changed the shape of my body from a classic broad, hunched, swimmer with chronic shoulder injury, to a more narrow, leaner, athlete, free of injury.
Wishing I had learned the principals of Pilates during my collegiate swimming career, I decided to study the method. Testing into Roman’s Pilates an 800-hour certification program in Los Angeles California. Studying under level 3 trainers, Trish Garland, Michael Levy, and in San Diego under Moses Urbano. I began teaching at “Pilates Mind and Body” before moving to Minneapolis MN, where I continued teaching at “Awaken Pilates”. It was in Minneapolis that I was introduced to other teaching methods, such as Balance Body, BASI, Stott, and Boulder. This further advanced my teaching repertoire by encompassing “classical” based principals with more non-traditional methods.
My husband and I moved to Boise ID, where I taught at Forte Pilates, Gold’s Gym, Crane Creek Country Club, and Muse. I have been teaching for 7 years and decided it was time to open my own studio. My vision is to create a studio environment that I would enjoy as a client, so welcome to “Breathing Room” in the heart of downtown Boise!
Melissa has been teaching group fitness since 2003 and has been certified as a personal trainer through since 2005. In addition to Pilates, Melissa teaches kettle-bells, Bulgarian bags, water fitness, Athletic conditioning, indoor cycling and Stand Up Paddle-board fitness. Melissa certified in mat Pilates in 2007, chair in 2010 and reformer in 2014. As an athlete and a dancer, Melissa feels that Pilates has enhanced her performance (on the stage and on race day). Melissa is always learning new, creative ways, sometimes from her students, to enhance the Pilates experience!!
Connie has been an instructor for 15 years, a personal trainer for 8 years, and a mom for 18 years. She has certifications, continuing education and teaching experience in multiple programs including Cardio Kickboxing, PiYo, TRX Suspension Training, Les Mills Fitness Programs, RIPPED, Reebok Spin, Z Spin, ImX Pilates Training, Kettlebell, ACSM personal training, Functional Movement, BOSU, Foam Roller MyoFacial Release technique, and SUP.
She has also managed to find time to become a Veteran Girls on the Run Coach and a Veteran Girl Scout Leader. Why? Because she’s a “busy-ass Mom of 3 super-smart and crazy-fun kids.”
Adventures with her kids and friends, paddleboarding, triathlon, snowboarding, skate skiing, piano, guitar, singing to her dog, traveling, hiking, and camping.
